Family Travels – Privacy

Last updated: 14 August 2026

Family Travels is a personal, family-use app for recording places your family has visited. This policy explains what data the app handles and how.

What the app stores

When you use Family Travels, it stores:

  • Family member names and a chosen colour for each person you add
  • Visit details: a place name, its coordinates, a date range, and optional notes you write
  • Optionally, if you choose to import from TripIt: trip names, dates, and locations pulled from a calendar feed URL or file you provide

How this data is stored and synced

All of the above is stored in your own iCloud account using Apple’s CloudKit framework. It is not sent to us, and we (the developer) do not operate any server that receives or stores your data — everything goes directly between your device and Apple’s iCloud service.

If you use the “Share with Family” feature, the data is shared with the specific people you invite via Apple’s private CloudKit sharing (an invite-only link sent through Messages, Mail, or similar — not a public link). Anyone you invite can see and add to the shared data until you or they leave the share.

Place search and geocoding

When you search for a place while adding a visit, your search text is sent to Apple’s MapKit/geocoding services to find matching locations and coordinates. This is standard Apple Maps functionality and is subject to Apple’s own privacy policy.

TripIt import

If you choose to import from TripIt, the feed URL you provide is stored only on your device (never in iCloud, never shared with anyone you invite to the app) and is used solely to fetch your trip data directly from TripIt’s servers. We never see this URL or your TripIt data.

What we don’t do

  • No analytics or usage tracking
  • No advertising or ad networks
  • No third-party data sharing
  • No account system beyond your existing Apple ID / iCloud account
  • No location tracking of your device — the app never accesses your current location; you choose where visits are located by searching for a place

Your data, your control

Because everything lives in your iCloud account, you can delete any family member or visit directly in the app at any time, which removes it from iCloud and from anyone you’ve shared it with. Deleting the app does not delete your iCloud data — delete individual entries in-app, or manage/delete the underlying iCloud data via your device’s iCloud settings.

Children

Family Travels is a utility for recording a family’s travel history, operated by the adult who installs it. It is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect data directly from children; any family member entries representing children are added by the adult user of the app.
