Good idea

Via Ben Rose there is what looks like a very good idea. registeredcall.com allows you to turn the tables on those “help” lines where help is the last thing they are aiming to give you. I have not had the occassion to use it yet but next time I have a problem I’ll definitely be coming back.

Searching

I have re-enabled searching on my blog. The only reason being that I needed a link that I had posted some time ago and couldn’t remember when! It has only been tested in IE6 and Firefox, no Mac testing (yet… on which, more to come next week hopefully) so please give me a shout if you find bugs.

And so another…

August Bank holiday weekend. There seem to be two traditions now, the Sunday barbeque with the whole Witnesham gang. Unfortunately it looks like the second tradition of cloud and rain is putting in an appearance as well. Just have to hope that the weather forecasts are wrong.

Oh… My… God…

We went for a quiet night out last night. I had booked an area at Vertigo42 which is a champagne bar at the top of Tower 42, the tallest building in the City of London. The views are quite simple stunning and although it’s expensive, it’s no more so than any other champagne bar in the City.

So we had a few bottles up there enjoying the view and then headed for a curry and some beers which was good fun and, being Brick Lane, good quality.

Now I had a few drinks admittedly but I don’t think I drank enough to deserve the hangover I’ve got this morning. It was so bad I almost didn’t make it in and that hasn’t happened for 7 or 8 years. I am in the office but I don’t think I’ll be very productive today. Not feeling too guilty though, given the amount of extra work I did at the weekend.

Now roll on 5 o’clock, I need to get out of here.

Olympic Excitement

I am not normally particularly into the Olympics but it does seem pretty exciting this year. Not least with the mens coxless fours rowing which we have just won by the smallest of margins. It does seem a pity that not all of the seats have been sold, I think that if the games were in the UK there wouldn’t be a free seat to be had for love nor money but we’ll have to wait to see if we’re given the opportunity in 2012.

Headaches and relief

Met up with an old friend in the City last night. A few beers, a bottle of wine and a curry later it was a matter of trying to get back to the hotel in the, now traditional, summer downpours.

Unsurprisingly there was a bit of a sore head this morning but for once some interesting mail in my inbox… Lotusphere 2005 early-bird registration has opened. I can’t remember it ever being this early before, but given my recent renewal I have taken the leap already. Given the time difference with the States (the email came in very early this morning), the Europeans have a bit of a headstart to get the hotel they want etc. So I also have a room booked at the Dolphin, which having done it last year is well worth the extra expense.

And so the count-down to January 2005 begins. It can’t be healthy to be this excited about a mere conference can it?

Active / Relaxing Weekend

I have been in Nottingham for a couple of days seeing Simon and Fiona. As ever it was hugely relaxing and great to catch up, but for a change we also went and “did” a tourist attraction, the Galleries of Justice. It is made up of a tour round an old police station (which shut in the 1980s) and the old courts and jail. Really interesting and made more so by the actors/guides who take you around.

With a movie, a few drinks, and a very nice chinese for dinner it was an excellent trip. Luckily, the weather was good as well although it looks like the rest of the week is going to revert to type for this summer – humid and rainy.

Hosting Web Services on Domino

This is something which I have been struggling with for a few days now and I can’t be the only person who has tried it. First, some background. I want to host a Web Service on a “pure” Domino server (i.e. no Websphere or extraneous add-ons) for various political reasons which are too boring to go into, I would rather not run agents as I am looking for performance so a servlet seems the obvious choice and finally I don’t want to have to manually parse the SOAP header, WSDL etc as we are trying to use complex data types between Domino and .Net.

Now, I realise that ND7 offers all of this with the new Web Service design element but I need it now unfortunately. Originally I was planning to use WSAD to read in the WSDL, generate the code and then just port it across to Domino but there is just too much hacking involved, I couldn’t get it to work anyway.

So now I am looking at Apache Axis to see whether it could be a go-er and it looks promising but I have issues… will it perform, how dangerous is it to replace wsdl4j.jar on the Domino server as suggested on notes.net?

If anyone has any experience it would be greatly appreciated. As I find the answers to the problems I’ll continue to post updates and then, if anyone is interested maybe put together some sort of article about my solution.
