No surprises then

So, Bush has won. No surprises there. The only shock was the margin, is this another case of the pollsters getting it wrong or the media trying to talk up the chances of a close race to get better ratings. Either way the whole thing has been a bit of a let down.

Mad couple of days

Life’s been extremely busy over the last couple of days. Every year there is a business analysis process which is meant to happen. Every year the analysis starts too late and the management team are surprised when we tell them that to do wha they are after will take slightly longer than two weeks!

So a three hour meeting this morning, 2 hours this afternoon and various document writing sessions later and we are beginning to sort out a way forward. It’s going to be a stressful few weeks.

Site Scoring Could do better!

Ben links to a great tool for website design. Silktide have written a tool which reviews your site for design, popularity performance etc and give you a score. All I can say is that I obviosuly need to do some work.

An interesting element is about the content accessibility: This website is probably unlawful in Britain from the 1st October 2004. The British Disability Discrimination Act makes it unlawful to discriminate against a disabled person by refusing to provide any service provided to members of the public – including websites.

When did this happen? How are people meant to know their obligations if they are not publicised? There is more information here.

Adviser Reunion

Last night I went to the reunion of a team I worked on over 4 years ago. It was great to catch up with everyone and is something which, hopefully, will happen more often in future. Quite scarily of the 10 or so people there, only a few of us don’t have kids now.

Even more scarily, the project we all worked on (which was an extranet system) is still live running on a 5.0.4 server. In one way this is good – our code was pretty good at the time. But in another way I am a bit disappointed that it hasn’t been taken further. It was a great system at the time but these days I imagine it’s looking rather dated.

Error

Not sure where the error on this page came from and I won’t be able to have a look at it until tonight.

Another release

A new design is going out for one of our apps this morning so it was a crack of sparrow start to get into the office by 07:30. It’s a relatively minor release but it’s always better to take them seriously so that nothing goes wrong. Hopefully this will be simpler than the last one.

Excellent Weekend

The end of a really good weekend. I headed back down to London on Saturday, originally planning to do the Saatchi gallery before going out in the evening but because the weather was so appalling I decided just to relax in the pub and have a few beers. Dinner in the evening was great fun, catching up with old friends is never hard work. The only challenge was getting a taxi at 01:30 on Sunday morning. But who needs sleep anyway.

Sunday was possibly the most relaxing day ever. A lazy start with breakfast in my hotel room and reading the newspaper. I headed off to meet up with the others at Simpsons in the Strand. While Dad had his carving lesson we wandered along the Enbankment and then up to Somerset House which is well worth a visit, especially when they convert the quad into an ice rink from the end of November.

Lunch was the definitive English roast, if you are looking for an example of what an English Sunday lunch is then book yourself in here. The couple of bottle of wine probably helped as well.

Back into the normal week now, but a weekend like this really sets you up. I wonder how long this will last?

Password quality

A very good article about password quality. When you see the maths behind brute force attacks it will make you think very carefully the next time you choose a password.
