Ever since moving down to London I’ve been using my car less and less to the point, now, where I’ve decided to sell it and use a service called StreetCar for the few times when I do need to drive somewhere. It’s a great idea where they leave cars all around the city, you book a time slot for £4.95 per hour (inclusive of petrol, insurance etc) and just go along to the car, enter a keycode to get in and off you go. From my flat there are two cars within 2 minutes walk so the risk of them both being used at the same time is pretty low. I’ll let you know how the whole move progresses but in theory it should cost me a lot less and not restrict movement in the slightest.
In the meantime if you know anyone looking for an ’03 Audi A4 then you know where to send them don’t you 😉
Very slightly, possibly, maybe interested. Just something we are toying with at the moment – but I’ll leave the hubby to talk to you more about it. http://www.11tmr.com/11tmr.nsf/emoticons/DLYH-5MZVLY/$File/smile.gif“ />
Welcome fellow tree hugger http://www.11tmr.com/11tmr.nsf/emoticons/DLYH-5MZVLS/$File/biggrin.gif“ />
Our transit-accessible, two-driver, one-car household in Washington DC has been relying on services similar to StreetCar for a number of years. In particular I like ZipCar the best, and blogged about it a while ago: { http://www.lotusguru.com/lotusguru/LGBlog.nsf/SearchResults?OpenNavigator&Query=zipcar“ rel=”nofollow” target =”blank”>Link }
One thing to keep in mind is that even if you don’t have a car near your home, if your final destination is on the the other side of town, you can also take transit to the nearest tube stop that has a Streetcar and pick it up from there.
Fun stuff.
This really is a great solution for people and city mobility problems.
The company I work for has been developing projects around this concept since 99 when they started a project in University of California. In the first few projects electric cars were used and now in cities like Singapore hybrids are been used. In Singapore you can check the car availability by SMS.
I hope they bring this to Europe soon.
